Archive fever exhibition

YEAH! the exhibition!

love the time capsule exercise. everyone was so excited opening the capsules, so curious of whats inside.

didnt get the chance to present my work during the exhibition. Took some pictures and here they areee….. cimg6152managed to find a piece of black cloth to cover the plain white table. so hmmm it did make my book stands out abit more i guess… haha.

as you can see, i combined everything together in this book. the outcome and archive as such.

cimg6154poster. wanted to make it an interactive one by pasting post-it on the poster and a pen was provided for anyone to write on it. everyone was busy that day and not many people wrote on it >_<

hahaposterthis is another poster for the exhibition. compared to the previous one, this is not as attractive and unable to direct/link to my work.

cimg6183cimg6184in this book, there are postcards on the pages. the postcards are supposed to be torn out to reveal the archive and analysis of the hand writing samples that i collected. the hand writing samples are printed in the book too. so ya everything is in this small book.

i drew the postcards according to the analysis. might not be accurate but i was inspired by the different handwritings.

mayyybeee

was busy ‘analysizing’ the handwriting samples that i’ve collected. discovered something special.

from these handwriting samples, i can categorise people in different groups. people who are from a certain generation give a similar type of handwriting.

so maybe i can work on that.. that direction?

mv!

i love this mv. look at how they use handwriting for the lyrics. although it is abit difficult to read. but the way they draw/write out the lyrics links to the whole feel of the song. haha i just love it alot!

another one here.

your handwriting computer fonts

a website from tzeqi.  you can convert your handwriting at this website, just a few simple steps!

http://www.yourfonts.com/print.html

but it sounds weird. create a computer font that is based on your own handwriting. i guess is because of convenience, and we hope to find ways to make something special using the easiest way. it reminds me of Typography III project, design a typeface that reflects myself.

cards

http://www.madebygirl.com/shop.php?showcat=1

found this website. some interesting cards designed using simple type and words. design is simple but very straigtforward/able to send out a message effectively.

i want to do something like that, but using handwriting.

to me, computer fonts can make a design look professional, but handwriting carries a certain kind of emotion and touch. the person who receives a handmade card will appreciate it more i guess? :)

draw or write?

Thanks Tze qi! for providing me with useful websites!

hmmm i found that i neglected something when i was collecting the handwritings from people. The way their body/muscles move is significant too for my project. whether someone draws or writes the letters, determines how their handwritings look too. do they draw? or write?

so similar! you write and draw with pen on paper. the difference to me, is that drawing needs more attention than writing. drawing = making a visual art. how about handwriting?

This exercise may help you determine which category is yours: Sit down and write a paragraph. Doesn’t matter what. Pay attention to the muscles you use to form your letters. Do you draw each letter with your fingers? Pick your hand up repeatedly to move it? Have an unrecognizable scrawl? Does your forearm move? Chances are, if you learned to write after 1955-60 (depending on where you went to grade school), you write with your fingers.

after asking my mum to give me her handwriting sample, she seems to look very puzzled.

“hmmm your aunt (my mum’s sis) and i have the similar style of handwriting because we were taught to write in that style.” she said. yes… if you remember, we used to practise cursive writing, that force you to write in a way that all your letters will slant in a certain direction.

last last thursday, my classmates suggested something about giving people a guide to follow. started with those dots alphabets for them to write on. after a while, we will be able to see the difference with and without guides, and also how people tend to change back to their own writing styles. very interesting!

but i find writing on such paper will be too restrictive, and lessen the chance for them to reveal their real character.

it is true that different generations provide different types of handwriting. maybe older generations with a more cursive writing, all slanting slightly to the right. from the handwritings i collected, the younger generation (like our age) usually write in simplified style, where most of the serifs are being ignored.

does that reflect a change in general attitude/character?

Farah ’s comment:
Very interesting! Actually it is very common that people change their handwriting as time passes. Does the normal rules or writing still apply? and if someone change their handwriting, did their personality and character change also, as shown by the new handwriting? Is there any habits or events in their lives that cause them to change their personality and subsequently their handwriting? This will be really interesting also as it will be a peek to that person’s mind and soul! =D

I remembered that i used to change my handwriting because of peer influences. During primary school time, my classmates and i always have a lot of fun designing decorative fonts/handwriting using markers and pencil. we loved to add flowers and fanciful to decorate our handwriting (i mean for us girls).

after awhile, we got sick of it so we changed back to the normal handwriting.

some of us even tried to imitate each other’s handwriting, but failed in the end. somehow, some things can be changed.

1year ago, my mum comment about my handwriting. she said that it was too kiddish. so i forced myself to learn cursive writing. it seems that cursive style of writing = growing up/I’m mature/I’m an adult.

but well my handwriting is still as kiddish even with the addition of ’slants and curves’.

it is funny that after so many attempts to change my handwriting style, i get back to the same old one.

why is that so? does this apply to everyone?

or no matter how a person change, some things will still remind unchange?

videossss

A few videos that teach us how to analysis handwriting styles.

it helps a lot in my project where i have to analyze handwriting and link it to that person’s character.

new year wishes

was at Sentosa yesterday for the Sentosa Flowers 2009. intended to take a day off from school work and enjoy the beauty of the flowers, but i saw alll of these! so i thought of school work again. haha

lots of handwriting.
cimg6024cimg6025cimg6028cimg6031cimg60291cimg6030cimg6027

people will pay for this piece of paper, write on it and hang it on a tree. the whole tree was covered by all these wishes. i took quite alot of time reading them, and it is quite funny to see what some of them wrote (like the 2nd one, sooo cute). you can see the different styles of handwriting, and without having to know that person, you will know from their handwriting about their age (hmmm maybe some hints from the messages on it too).

hmm hope their wishes come true

Graphology from WIKI

Graphology is the study and analysis of handwriting especially in relation to human psychology. In the medical field, it can be used to refer to the study of handwriting as an aid in diagnosis and tracking of diseases of the brain and nervous system. The term is sometimes incorrectly used to refer to forensic document examination.

Graphology has been a controversial field for more than a century. Although supporters point to the  anecdotal evidence of thousands of positive testimonials as a reason to use it for personality evaluation, most empirical studies fail to show the validity claimed by its supporters.

Handwriting Characteristic Interpretation
Slant handwriting of the letters
  • A forward slant indicates high emotional expressiveness
  • Vertical handwriting indicates moderate, restrained emotional expression
  • A left slant indicates emotional withdrawal.
Angle of the lines on unlined paper
  • An upward slant indicates optimism and higher energy.
  • A downward slant or lines with trail off the page indicate low energy or physical exhaustion.
  • A slant to the right can indicate sensitivity, while a slant to the left can indicate a hardness of the character. Fairly straight writing can indicate a balanced frame or state of mind.
General shape of the strokes
  • Circular handwriting indicates an agreeable, easygoing nature.
  • Angular handwriting with sharp points indicates aggressiveness, directness, and high energy
  • Square handwriting indicates a real world, practical based approach
  • Squiggles and irregular strokes indicate an artistic and non standard approach
Individual letters
  • The letter “t” has the largest number of interpretations. For example where the horizontal “bar” of the t is placed on the vertical “stem” indicates where one places their goals, while the height of the t stem indicates the potential to accomplish those goals.
  • A low t bar indicates goals or self esteem set lower than what can be accomplished.
  • A t bar high on the stem indicates goals set high and a high self esteem.
  • A t bar that is above the stem indicates setting goals higher than can be accomplished.
  • A cursive y that has been crossed back over ornately or several times can indicate a perverted state of mind.

Pressure applied on the paper while writing

  • The emotional intensity behind a person’s behavior. The heavier the pressure, the more intense the emotions of that person.
  • The pressure on the paper can also indicate the level of stress that the person is experiencing. (The more pressure applied, the more stress the person is under.)
